How to avoid White Mold in Beans

Eradicate the source of the disease from the Soil!

What is it?

Whether you’re growing soybeans, snap beans or dry edible beans, Contans® WG can provide the most effective control of White Mold. It is a biological fungicide, which controls Sclerotinia diseases by attacking the disease-causing fungus in the soil before it can infect a susceptible plant.

Contans® WG is made up of spores of the naturally occurring soil fungus Coniothyrium minitans. Once applied and incorporated into the soil, Coniothyrium minitans attacks and destroys the black sclerotia, which are the resting survival structures of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. This action breaks the “cycle of disease” by reducing or eliminating the disease causing fungus from treated soil.

Features

•Water dispersible granular formula
•Applied preplant or to harvest residues
•Compatible with many herbicides
•Plant-compatible biological fungicide
•University tested and proven effective
•OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) listed

Benefits

•Reduces or eliminates the disease-causing sclerotia from treated soil
•Stay in the soil may provide long-term protection
•Eradicates the sclerotia of Sclerotinia diseases
•Easy mixing and simple application through conventional spray equipment

Preplant: Contans® WG should, when possible, be applied at least 6-8 weeks prior to an anticipated White Mold outbreak. This will allow the active fungal ingredient to destroy the sclerotia in the soil. For maximum effectiveness, Contans® WG should be applied before or at planting time. We recommend 2 pounds/acre for preplant applications. For soils previously treated with Contans® WG, apply only 1 pound/acre. On lighter textured soils, overhead irrigation can be a good method for application.

Perhaps the best application is to harvest residues: Contans® WG may also be applied to bean stubble to prevent a new contamination of the soil with sclerotia just formed in the crop and on/near the soil surface. This can be done in the fall or spring. This will significantly reduce the disease pressure for the next bean or other susceptible crop. On lighter textured soils, irrigation is a good means of application. Use just 1 pound/acre.

No-till or reduced tillage: Apply to moist soil in anticipation of rainfall over the crop stubble. Lighter textured soils will likely benefit most from this application. Light tillage is recommended of optimal results.

To avoid turning up untreated sclerotia from lower soil layers, treated soil should not be tilled deeper than the treated layer prior to or at planting. Dissolve the appropriate amount of Contans® WG in water and spray it directly onto the soil surface using conventional equipment. Equipment should be clean and free of any crop fungicides or fertilizers. Do not mix with UAN fertilizer solutions. Following application, white mold control with Contans® WG is best if the product is incorporated into the soil by disk harrow or other suitable device. Application should be done as evenly as possible.
